A bubble is a gathering problem, not a sewing problem

The silhouette looks simple because it is soft. It is the hardest shape in the baby range to hold consistent.

• The gather ratio is the whole design. Too much and the body reads as a sack; too little and it pulls tight and gaps at the leg. The ratio is set per size, because the same number that sits correctly on a 2T will not sit correctly over a preemie nappy.
• The waist gather has to run even around the full circumference. The bubble is the only volume in the garment, so an uneven gather shows immediately as a lopsided body — which is exactly what a product photograph exposes.
• The leg elastic is where a bubble fails. The fabric above it is gathered, so the opening has to hold without cutting into a thigh. Too tight and the mark is still there at bath time.
• The ruffle sleeve is hand work. It is gathered, set evenly over the shoulder seam and turned — and it has to survive washing without collapsing flat against the arm.
• The crotch snaps carry the whole garment. They are the only functional opening, so they are worked several times a day, one-handed, on a moving baby. YKK snap tension is specified rather than assumed, and the colour is matched to the dye lot — on a solid-dyed body an unmatched snap reads as a mistake at arm's length.

Fabric, certification and the claims buyers ask about

Tanboocel® bamboo viscose is smooth at the fibre, breathable, and moves moisture away rather than holding it. It stays durable through washing, which is what makes an eco-conscious, eco-friendly or sustainable claim worth making on a garment a baby wears all day.

Bamboo is usually sold on antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties. Neither has a standard behind it that a factory can be audited against, so we would rather hand you the document. What can be audited is OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100, Product Class I — the baby class — under certificates BJ020 287849 and BJ025 287848, valid to 15.07.2027. For children's garments sold into the US, the framework that applies is CPSIA; ask for the test report with the certificate. Sensitive skin is the reason buyers ask, and the certificate is the answer that holds up.

On organic. Organic certification applies to agricultural fibre, and bamboo viscose is not one — it is a regenerated cellulose fibre, so a bamboo garment cannot honestly be sold as certified organic. If your range needs that claim, the route is organic cotton, where we do hold certification. Keeping the two apart is the difference between an organic line and a complaint.
